LA Galaxy vs SJ Earthquakes Preview

The LA Galaxy are taking on the San Jose Earthquakes in Thursday night's MLS "Game of the week."

The Galaxy have 39 points and are back in charge of the West. They are looking like their old selves again after Sunday nights win against D.C. United. "Super" Edson Buddle continued to add to his breakthrough season with goal #11 and Omar Gonzalez was looking like the rookie of the year again. Donovan even got in on the action with a pk for the win. The Galaxy still have some wrinkles to iron out and a win against the Earthquakes might be the way to do so. They seemed a little lost the first half against DCU last week and continue to have problems in the midfield. Their hectic schedule might force Bruce Arena to make heavy changes to the starting XI.

The Earthquakes have only made 22 points this season and are currently 5th place in the West. Keep in mind the Earthquakes have played 3 less games than Galaxy. Last Saturday they faced a fatigued Tottenham in friendly play but were held to a draw. The game before they defeated the Union 2 -1 in league play. For the Earthquakes this is the perfect game to get a streak started with a big win over the league leaders. They haven't lost in their last 4 games but only won 1 game of the 4. They have shown no signs of improvement and need to make a serious adjustment. Coach Frank Yallop brings his 4-4-2 defensive shell to every game and I don't expect him to switch it up on Thursday, but he should seriously consider it.

My prediction is that the Galaxy will sneak away with another win. The Galaxy are undefeated at home and I expect it to remain that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends in a draw. The Earthquakes will be struggling to contain Donovan and Buddle but could get the counter attack going if Bruce holds back too much. Worse case scenario for the Galaxy is a tie, but I really can't see that happening. I'm calling 2-1, Galaxy. I'll be there, will you? - @Trunksra
